When my agency moved to Charlottesville in August 1970 we found ourselves in a new city with two small children and few friends. We were blessed to become members of Holy Comforter parish. Msgr. Chester P. Michael was pastor. At the time, “Fr. Chet” was spending part of each summer at Notre Dame studying psychology and spirituality. We have been blessed to be his students ever since.
Fr. Chet’s book on Myers-Briggs personality types and prayer, Prayer and Temperament has sold over 100,000 copie – with no advertising other than word of mouth.
Since 1989 he has been teaching the art of spiritual direction to lay people in the central Virginia area. His approach is summarized in his book An Introduction to Spiritual Direction: A Psychological Approach for Directors and Directees .
His website contains links on a wide variety of topics in Jungian psychology, personality theory and classical texts of Christian spirituality.
On April 23, 2000 the Charlottesville Daily Progress published an article in appreciation of his 58 years of priestly ministry.
We have now been in Charlottesville for 34 years, raised 4 children, a nephew and a niece. Much of what I write on spirituality in the workplace and marital spirituality is the fruit of his teaching. We thank God for Fr. Chet’s preaching, friendship, and help through the years.
