I have to follow the previous posting with this one. Tivo, which I like, allows time-shifting. Our schedule is no longer structured around those few TV programs that we like. Tivo lets us watch what we want - and skip the ads we don't want to see. According to this mornings WaPo the next big thing in consumer electronics is place shifiting.
That's geek-speak for carrying media around in your pocket, on your lapel, in your car or -- who could forget? -- on your cell phone. Only you won't be calling it a cell phone judging by all the new features phone makers are building into their do-everything communication contraptions. .
If we do this, it only opens us up to the stresses of the workplace which can claim our attention 24/7. We can then escape by constant distractions made possible by place shifting and time shifting. The result will be that we drive ourselves individually and collectively into insanity. (Insanity is often defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a better result).
What we need is the Benedictine balance among prayer, work, and holy leisure .
