This Sunday’s gospel reading should cause us to pause and reflect on what we see and do not see. The Pharisees were sure that Jesus could not have given sight to the man born blind. Because:
"We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from."
I wonder how many of us are so sure that God has spoken in favor of our ideas about church or politics that we are blind to the miracles happening every day. It doesn’t matter what our party is. Political conservatives and liberals are subject to blindness just as are church traditionalists and progressives.
If you’ve read this far, examined your conscience and are sure that your vision is sound, reflect on John 9:41
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, "Surely we are not also blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, 'We see,' so your sin remains.
Maybe our best hope is in the prayer Paul prayed for the Ephesans 1:18
An enlightened heart is the best remedy for a mind blinded by our political and ecclesiastical ideas.
