The curmudgeon in me asks “Why couldn’t they have called it the Biblical Literacy Project”? Maybe all those English teachers gave up the fight for correct usage after they were unable to find a good way to say “computer literacy.”
Grousing aside, we should all take a look at the Bible Literacy Project. It describes why a group of outstanding high school English teachers think that a knowledge of the Bible is essential to understanding literature. The project will make curriculum materials and First Amendment guides available.
My son, David, once said that his confirmation class gave him an advantage as a literary and cultural studies major at the College of William and Mary.
Parents, even if you have a good public school system - as we do in Charlottesville - be sure that your children get some religious education and Bible studies. As the project shows, this will give them an advantage in the secular world as well as strengthen their faith.
