Our local newsaper carried story about the Bible Literacy Project. It is
a non-partisan, non-profit endeavor to encourage and facilitate the academic study of the Bible in public schools. Founded in 2001 by Chuck Stetson, we believe that failure to teach about the Bible leaves students in ignorance and cultural illiteracy. Our children – our country – need a textbook that will pass constitutional muster. When our son was at William and Mary, arguably the most rigorous liberal arts college on the East Coast, he found that he had two advantages in his literature classes. First, he had excellent teachers at Charlottesville High. Second, because of his confirmation class, he had the background necessary to understand Western literature. Many of his classmates, also graduates of public schools, lacked this background.
The literacy project’s board of directors includes several prestigious university and law professors and some editors. They should have included a grammarian on the board. Is it too much to expect that they would distinguish between nouns and adjectives and called it the Biblical Literacy Project?
