Paulinus of Nola whose feast day is today. Paulinus, married and the father of a son who died in infancy, was ordained in 391 at the insistence of a crowd in Barcelona. Paulinus, who continued to live with his wife, fostered monasticism in Nola.
I hope that Paulinus makes Cardinals, Bishops, and Vatican officials nervous today. Think of it, what would happen to the church if crowds were able to select married men to celebrate, bless and teach? We might even find a few saintly bishops among them.
