I just went to the New York Times website to get a column by John Tierney. The NYT is now requiring a subscription to New York Times Select at $49.95/year. Sorry folks. I can read David Brook in my local paper. I understand that, like all businesses, you need to make a profit and pay your writers. Cut your price by half, and I'll think about it. It will take more than John Tierney and David Brooks to make me subscribe. At $12, I would consider it a bargain. Does it really cost anywhere near $50 a year for you to provide web access for me?
How about this: $15 gets me the privilege of providing links to selected writers, plus guest columns. I don't think I'll miss Maureen Dowd.
